Figshare is an online data sharing platform which allows users to make all of their research outputs available in a citable, shareable, and discoverable manner.
The service offers a straightforward and convenient way of making data available for reuse, or for hosting data used in visualisations. However, while it has many advantages, users should note that no guarantees are made about the length of time for which data will be preserved, and hence it may not be suitable for meeting funding body requirements if used alone: deposit in a conventional archive may also be advisable.
Figshare is also the platform used by the University of Oxford's Sustainable Digital Scholarship (SDS) service. Using the SDS provides greater assurance than uploading data to Figshare as a private individual, as there are backup options for preserving and providing access to the data in the unlikely event of the platform becoming inoperable.
